Palm Beach Cardinals Report April 6-15, 2012

The Palm Beach Cardinals opened the 2012 season with four wins in their first ten games which included a doubleheader spilt on April 7 and three-game losing streak to end the period.  The A-Advanced Cardinals are 3-5 at home and 1-1 record on the road.  The club has a .400 PCT and are four games out of first in the Florida State League South Division.

Recap April 6-15:

April 6 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game: Seth Maness and Matthew Neil were called on as opening day starters for Palm Beach and Jupiter.  Both teams went scoreless through the fourth frames.  The Hammerheads were able to get to the Cardinals first, as Ronny Gil committed an error and the runner scored later in the fifth.  Palm Beach took the lead scoring two runs in the next two innings with a couple fielding errors contributing to Michael Swinson scoring in the fifth and Starling Rodriguez using his base running skills to score from first in the sixth.  The Cardinals and Hammerheads exchanged runs again over the next three innings to keep it tied up at 3-3, which included a Marcell Ozuna solo home run.  On into the tenth inning, Jupiter found the holes and punched four runs through to beat Palm Beach 7-3.

April 7 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game: Even though sharing the same ball field, Palm Beach and Jupiter flip flopped home duties for the doubleheader.  The Cardinals got things started in the first with Ronny Gil getting on with a walk and advancing around on a wild pitch.  Starlin Rodriguez singled in Gil and scored himself on a wild pitch, ground out, and fielding error.  Starlin would come back to strike in the third hitting a ground-rule double and crossing the plate on a Jonathan Rodriguez single.  The Hammerheads put a couple runs on the board on Carlos Martinez in the third and fourth before exited and the scoreboard went blank from the fifth to the eighth.  Palm Beach loaded up the bases looking to add insurance runs but only received one as Mike O'Neill doubled in Geoff Klein for the 4-2 win over Jupiter.

April 7: Zach Neal of Jupiter and Richard Castillo of Palm Beach each exchanged scoreless innings into the fifth innings.  The Cardinals pulled Castillo possibly a little earlier and the Hammerheads pushed a run across on Iden Nazario's watch to take the 1-0 lead.  Daniel Pertusati singled and advanced around the diamond on a passed ball, wild pitch, and Isaac Galloway double for the second and final run of the game.  Palm Beach could only pull off four singles, two by Alan Ahmady, and two walks as Jupiter won 2-0.

April 8: The Palm Beach Cardinals had day off

April 9 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game:  Bradenton came to town for a three-game set against Palm Beach.  Anthony Ferrara tossed five innings and allowed three hits, one earned run, four walks, and struck four out to open for the Cardinals.  Dean Kiekhefer and Chase Reid would combine to pitch the final four innings only giving up one hit, no runs, and struck three out.  The Palm Beach offense was kept minimal again with Jonathan Rodriguez doubling in the second and scoring on a Geoff Klein single.  Nick Longmire hit a game-winning solo home run off Jonathan Ramos in the bottom of the ninth to give the Cardinals a 2-1 win over the Marauders.

April 10 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game: Palm Beach lit the scoreboard up first in the first inning, but like previous games kept within a couple runs.  Mike O'Neill singled, Michael Swinson singled, and Chris Edmondson doubles to put the Cardinals up 2-0.  Drew Benes struck six out but was knocked out of the game after Bradenton slapped three runs on the board combined over the third and fourth innings.  The Palm Beach bullpen did their best impression to keep with Bradenton tossing three scoreless innings but the Marauders scored another run as Drew Maggi came around to score.  Bradenton loaded up the bases in the ninth on a couple singles and a walk and scored two more runs as they beat Palm Beach 6-2.

April 11 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game:  Seth Maness came through with another dominating performance tossing seven scoreless innings and only allowing six hits while striking out four.  The offense for Palm beach also exploded in the second for the team as they racked up nine runs in the inning on rehabbing A.J. BurnettChris Edmonsdon got things started with a double followed by a Jonathan Rodriguez single.  Alan Ahmady drove in Edmondson on a double.  Geoff Klein reached first on a wild pitch after a strikeout which in turn scored Rodriguez.  Packy Elkins doubled to score Ahmady and Vance Albitz singled to score Klein.  Michael Swinson created the first out grounding into a force out sending Albitz to the bench.  Nick Longmire created the second out, but Starlin Rodriguez reached on a hit by pitch and Edmondson walked to load the bases.  Stefan Welch committed a throwing error that let Swinson and Starlin score.  Ahmady sent two more runs across with a double and Klein ended the innings striking out.  Bradenton was able to make a small dent in the score with four runs in the eighth, three of which were walks off Zach Russell.  The Cardinals beat the Marauders 10-4.

April 12 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game: Palm Beach hosted St. Lucie for a three-game series next up.  Richard Castillo followed in Maness footsteps having another impressive outing for his second start.  Castillo allowed five hits, one earned run, one home run (a leadoff by Daniel Muno), one walk, and struck three out over six innings.  Gonzalez Germen didnt pitch too bad for St. Lucie either.  German just gave up seven hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck six out to help keep the Cardinals in reach.  Dean Kiekhefer and Chase Reid finished off the game pitching three innings only allowing one hit, no runs, and striking out three.  Packy Elkins drove in Alan Ahmady in the sixth and Ahmady drove in Chris Edmondson in the eighth as Palm Beach beat St. Lucie 3-1.

April 13 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game: In the second game between St. Lucie and Palm Beach, the Cardinals managed to out hit the Mets but couldn't convert them to runs.  Palm Beach collected a total of seven hits, Alan Ahmady contributed two and Mike O'Neill with a double for the only extra base hit, and the team also had two walks.  Carlos Martinez made his second and best start of the season striking out eight and allowing two hits, one earned run, and three walks over six innings.  The Cardinals offense again didn't show up and lost to the Mets 2-0.

April 14 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game: For the three-game finale between Palm Beach and St. Lucie, we got another dose of small ball.  Palm Beach had a bullpen game using four pitchers to handle two innings a piece.  Mike O'Neill scored the first run for Palm Beach with a single and was moved along to home by a few more following singles.  St. Lucie answered back as they loaded the bases in the second and Cory Vaughn scored on a Wilfredo Tovar double to left field.  Wilmer Flores sacrificed to right field to score Robbie Shields and give the Mets the 2-1 lead.  Aidan Lucas highlighted the Cardinals bullpen with two and a third scoreless and striking out five.  The Mets took the series two games to three with a 2-1 win.

April 15 Palm Beach Official Site Post Game: Palm Beach hit the road for a stretch with Bradenton and after the last meeting, the Marauders were eager to handle the Cardinals.  Hunter Strickland pitched six innings allowing seven hits, no runs, two walks, and struck six out.  The Marauders offense went to task on the Cardinals, nailing down five runs in the third that included a couple walks, base stealing, and a three-run homer by Carlos Paulino.  Bradenton added two more runs a piece in the fifth and sixth innings.  Kyle Conley hit a solo homer in the eighth for Palm Beach to end the zeros on the scoreboard but Bradenton pulled off the win 10-1.

Who's Hot:

Alan Ahmady collected a mid-week six-game on base streak.  The 24-year old right-handed hitter went 10-for-33 (.303) with three doubles, four RBIs (two w/two-outs), one walk, two runs, seven strikeouts, one caught stealing, and grounded into on double play.  He played three games in right field, where he had one outfield assist, and six games at third base, where he assisted in one double play.  Ahmady was also ejected in the first inning of the April 15 game.

Mike O'Neill will look to continue a ten-game on base and four-game hitting streak into the next period.  The 24-year old left-handed hitter went 10-for-35 (.286) with three doubles, one RBI, five walks, two stole bases, four strikeouts, and grounded into two double plays.  He played three games as designated hitter, five games in left field, and two in centerfield.

Starlin Rodriguez, like O'Neill, is carrying a ten-game on base streak with him.  The 22-year old switch-hitter went 10-for-37 (.270) with two doubles, one triple, three RBIs (one w/two-outs), three walks (two intentional), two hit by pitches, two stolen bases, four runs, eight strikeouts, grounded into two double plays, and was picked off once.  He played six games at second base (assisted in five double plays), two games at third base (assisted in two double plays), and two games as designated hitter.

Seth Maness made two impressive starts for Palm Beach that should put himself on the overlooked prospect lists.  The 23-year old right-hander made his debut April 6 and pitched seven innings allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), one home run, and struck four out.  The on April 11, he went another seven innings giving up six hits, no runs, and sitting four batters on strikes.  The 2011 11th round (350th overall selection) earned one win and had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 27-to-2.

Richard Castillo did his best to keep stride with Maness, just couldn't keep up innings wise.  The 22-year old right-hander made his 2012 debut on April 7 pitching five and two-thirds innings allowing one hit, one earned run, three walks, and struck five out.  He then gave up five hits, one earned run, one home run, one walk, hit one batter, and struck three out on April 12.  The six-year minor league hurler split his two decisions and had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 13-to-6.

Who's Not:

Geoff Klein struck out twice or more in three games during this last period.  The 24-year old switch-hitter went 5-for-25 (.200) with one RBI, two walks, three runs, one hit by pitch, and ten strikeouts.  He played six games at catcher (he allowed seven stolen bases, one passed ball, and assisted in one double play) and one game at first base.

Nick Longmire struck out two or more times in four out of nine games.  The 23-year old right-handed hitter went 3-for-35 (.086) with one home run, one two-out RBI, one run, two hit by pitches, and 15 strikeouts.  He played six games in centerfield (committing one fielding error) and three games in right field.

Zach Russell threw real well in his first relief appearance and struggled in his next three.  The 22-year old right-hander threw an extended three innings on April 7 allowing no hits, no runs, hit one batter, threw one wild pitch, and struck one out for the winning decision.  He then threw on April 11, 13, and 15 for a combined 2.2 innings giving up four hits, six earned runs, four walks, hit one batter, threw three wild pitches, and struck three out.  The 2007 49th round (1427th overall) selection had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 8-to-2.

Anthony Ferrara made one great start and had it flipped around in his second.  The 22-year old right-hander made his 2012 debut on April 9 as he pitched five innings and gave up three hits, one earned run, four walks, and struck four out.  On April 15 he was strapped with six hits, seven runs (five earned), one home run, four walks, and struck two out over five innings for the losing decision (0-1).  The 2008 7th round (215th overall selection) had a combined ground out-to-fly out ratio of 15-to-7.

Drew Benes had minor blemishes but not enough to go crazy over in only one start.  The 23-year old right-hander allowed four hits, three earned runs, hit one batter, and struck six out over three and a third innings on April 10.  He had a ground out-to-fly out ratio of 5-to-0.
